To keep all of our families up-to-date with the happenings of the Treehouse, here is an update about what has been going on this past week:
Reading - Students are in the middle of Unit 4 where they are studying the elements of fiction (plot, setting, character, character development) and strategies about answering questions by going back into the text to find evidence! They are orally reading Tuck Everlasting by Natalie Babbitt as a class and using these strategies. Make sure your student is reading 30 minutes for 5 nights out of the week! Writing - Both 4th and 5th Grade started their revisions of their Personal Narrative stories this week. All students are revising for strong opening sentences and adding sensory details. 5th Grade is also focusing on adding a "lesson learned" into their story while 4th Grade is ensuring they have appropriate transitional words and phrases throughout their writing. At home, students can continue to revise for these areas of focus and also edit their piece for correct punctuation and capitalization in their Personal Narrative Writing Journal on Google Classroom. 4th Grade Math - We started Unit 3 this week, focusing on multiplication and division strategies. Students have also been reviewing content from Unit 2 which ended with a test this past Wednesday (creating line plots with data, identifying minimum, maximum, mode, and median on line plots) in preparation for Unit 2 retakes in the next couple weeks. At home, students can work on pages from their math packet or choose resources on the Math Website (click "Math" tab) 5th Grade Math - 5th Graders are wrapping up Unit 1, focusing on multiplication and division strategies, finding all the factors of a number, and order of operations. Their End of Unit 1 check-in will be this upcoming Friday, October 28th. At home, students can work on pages from their math packet or choose resources on the Math Website (click "Math" tab) Science - We finished our Quarter 1 Science units on Tuesday! The Weather and Climate Unit students hosted a PK Weather Center for the K/1 Learning Community and the Energy Unit students competed in a bracket-style challenge to race their toy car they created! We switched units on Thursday, so students are now experiencing either Weather and Climate or Energy (whichever one they haven't had yet). Social Studies - We had a check-in about our learning of the different Native American tribes, comparing how their cultures were similar or different from each other and inferring why. Students will be moving on to learn about early explorers next Wednesday! As we enter into the second rotation of our science units, the Energy lessons are needing some "recharging" of AA batteries. Any and all donations are welcome! If you would like to donate AA batteries, simply have your student turn them into their advisory teacher. Thank you in AAdvance!
