Reading : Students wrapped up Unit 6 about making inferences this Thursday and started Unit 7 about text structure (cause and effect, chronological, pros and cons) in nonfiction text. They will be reading articles about different topics, choosing opinions, and then finding evidence in the text to support their opinions. Students should continue to read outside of school at least 5 times a week for 30 minutes each session.
Writing : Students wrapped up their Expository Nonfiction Unit today. 4th Grade researched specific countries and 5th Grade researched any topic of their choice. Students created Google Slides of their writing piece. and shared them with their grade levels today. They will begin their Opinion Unit next Tuesday (preview of unit video HERE). Monday, all students will go through a simulation of the FSA Writing assessment as practice for the real assessment on March 7th. 4th Grade Math : We are continuing in Unit 5, focusing on adding and subtracting large numbers, comparing size of numbers, and rounding by place value. Students explore different methods to add and subtract while ensuring accuracy and conciseness. As always, students should be choosing activities that help them reach mastery on their current goals, either using the math paper packet or the resources posted on the Treehouse Website, recording what they do outside of school on their Goal Tracker. 5th Grade Math : As we near the end of Unit 4, 5th graders have been focusing on multiplying fractions and using visual representations to equations to show their thinking. Students should continue practicing the benchmark of adding and subtracting fractions with unlike denominators. Next week we will get to our last benchmark in the unit : dividing fractions! As always, students should be choosing activities that help them reach mastery on their current goals, either using the math paper packet or the resources posted on the Treehouse Website, recording what they do outside of school on their Goal Tracker. Science : Our students currently in the Universe unit explored the structure of our solar system, including its' different objects like asteroids, comets, planets, moons and the sun. They also and created a map of the solar system that included all of these objects! Our students currently in the Life of Animals unit continue to observe our 8-legged friends, explored how scientists classify animals, and experienced a presentation from the UF Wildlife Club! They even got to touch an alligator and experienced first hand how reptiles have scales and are cold-blooded! Social Studies : We took a pause this week on our current Westward Expansion unit to learn more about the life and work of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. They explored articles, websites, and videos to hear more about his vision and big moments in his life. Students can continue to learn about MLK through the resources linked under the "MLK JR." tab on our Treehouse website! This is a friendly reminder that all chocolate fundraising money is due this next Monday, January 30th! If you have any questions, feel free to email Tara Palmer at [email protected].
Dear Parents,
We are in the middle of an important fundraising project for the NASA trip. We are selling World’s Finest chocolate. In order to participate, we need you to fill out a permission slip and return each time your child checks out a box of chocolate. Here are the steps: 1. Fill out and return Permission Slip (No Money... YET). Each chocolate bar sells for $1.00. A box contains 60 bars of chocolate. The $60 MUST be returned prior to signing out more chocolate. 2. Sell the chocolate! Do your best to sell as many chocolate bars as possible Unsold chocolate may NOT be returned. Also, please remember to be safe - DO NOT allow or encourage students to sell door to door. 3. Return the money. Return the $60 (for 60 bars of chocolate) to school. NO CHANGE PLEASE! We have parent volunteers who will be counting the money daily. It will take too long if they have to count pennies, nickels, and dimes. Please take all change and turn it into bills before returning the chocolate. Alternatively, you can take the cash and write a check to the University of Florida for the $60. 4. Start over! In order to check out a new box of chocolate, a new permission slip must be filled out. This helps us with our accounting. Remember if you can’t sell the chocolate, you are still responsible for the $60, because we cannot accept returned chocolate. The chocolate fundraiser ends on Monday, January 30. If you have any questions, feel free to email Ms. Palmer at [email protected]. Thank you!!
